Surbana Jurong raises over S$60,000 for Habitat for Humanity Singapore on sixth anniversary

Month-long cycle, jog and walk event drew support from colleagues, clients and the community

Singapore, 21 July 2021 – In conjunction with Surbana Jurong Group’s sixth anniversary, staff of the group have raised S$63,837 for Habitat for Humanity Singapore to help vulnerable elderly and families, many of whom have been impacted by the loss of income since the start of COVID-19.

Together, in a campaign called SJ Virtual Charity: Cycle, Jog and Walk, the staff signed up to cover long distances on foot or by bike, inviting colleagues, partners, family and friends to show their support for their efforts by donating.

Mr Wong Heang Fine, Group CEO, Surbana Jurong said: “The COVID-19 pandemic has been disproportionately harder on vulnerable families who face greater health and economic risks. We want to do our part to help the community in whatever way we can. The charity drive is another way to leverage our network of business associates and stakeholders to build back better.”

The target was initially set at S$6,000 at the start of the fundraising drive in partnership with Habitat for Humanity Singapore, an international charity dedicated to the alleviation of poverty through the provision of housing for all.

Surbana Jurong employees garnered the support of family and friends by creating their own fund-raising pages and sharing photos on social media.

Miss Tan Siew Ling, Principal Project Manager at Surbana Jurong Township, surpassed her minimum sum target of S$500.00, and clocked 106km within the second week of the campaign. Despite that, she continued to cycle and promote her fund-raising efforts on Facebook, and ended up covering over 200km by the end of the campaign.

“I think it’s worthwhile for Surbana Jurong to be involved in such activities as we are building homes and communities for the general public. Since we have the expertise, we can contribute to the community and help to build something that is sustainable and enduring. Speaking from my over 20 years of experience in upgrading, first with HDB and now Surbana Jurong, I feel that we can help the beneficiaries to have a habitable place and a more healthy lifestyle in terms of their living environment. I’m heartened to note that the money that we raise together will go towards enabling Habitat for Humanity Singapore to work with vulnerable persons and families who need help to rehabilitate their homes into a safe and sanitary state,” said Miss Tan.

Mr James Ng, Deputy Director, Business Strategy & Development, SMM Pte Ltd, a member of Surbana Jurong Group, clocked the distance of 106km for the cycling category in the first week of his fund-raising campaign.

“It’s a good experience to contribute back to society, and our contribution can take many forms including monetary and non-monetary. At the personal level, I can put my interest in cycling to work and raise money for charity. Besides contributing money, as experts in building homes, Surbana Jurong can contribute our built environment expertise and leverage our capabilities,” said Mr Ng.
