The SMEC Foundation has donated A$30,000 to Habitat for Humanity for disaster preparedness in Fiji. With the donation, Habitat for Humanity Fiji purchased tarpaulins and rope to prepare 300 emergency kits ahead of the November-April cyclone season.
Mr Zahid Iqbal, SMEC’s Regional Manager – Pacific & Philippines, presented the donation on behalf of the SMEC Foundation during the recent ceremonial turnover in Suva. The kits will help keep people in temporary shelters when displaced by a natural disaster. Fiji suffered heavy casualties in 2016 when Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston struck the islands and left some 40,000 homes damaged or destroyed. The SMEC Foundation is a core part of SMEC’s corporate social responsibility. Since 2001, the Foundation has donated around A$1,000,000 to over 200 projects in the areas of health, education, community development, emergency relief and the environment. SMEC is a member of the Surbana Jurong Group.
