Surbana Jurong’s landscape architecture designs have bagged eight awards at the 2022 Singapore Landscape Architecture Awards. The awards, including one gold and one silver, were in recognition of the team’s projects in Singapore, China and Vietnam.

Organised by the Singapore Institute of Landscape Architects (SILA), the awards celebrate the best landscape architecture designs by Singapore architecture firms. Team SJ won both the Gold and Silver Awards in the Analysis & Planning category for a Climate Resilient Coastal Belt in Yazhou Bay and an Urban Vitality Landscape Planning project in Nan Fan. Both projects are in China.

Restorative effort in landscape design

The landscape master plan for Yazhou Bay uses three key design elements to address existing conditions, namely the restoration of ecological wetland to preserve the integrity of the ecosystem, the reforestation of the coastal belt to strengthen natural habitats, and the creation of a resilient riverfront park with sustainability features that tap on smart technology. The SILA jury recognised the careful consideration taken by landscape architects to study the data to ensure that the design can help to restore the area.

Nan Fan’s landscape design connects communities through people-centric transportation, with water-sensitive urban design, biodiversity preservation and vertical greenery. These elements are included in a central green corridor to create a sense of vitality. This landscape development model provided recreation for users and supported ecological conservation, said the SILA jury.

The six other winning projects by the landscape architecture team are:

Activating Urban Water Genes at Jiashan Wuzitang Waterfront (China)
Merit Award (Analysis & Planning category)
Upper Serangoon Heritage Corridor (Singapore)
Merit Award (Parks & Recreational category)
Blue-Green Masterplan Angel Island, Ho Chi Minh City (Vietnam)

Northshore StraitsView (Singapore)
Merit Award (Residential category)
An Oasis for People & Nature: Yishun Boardwalk & Park (Singapore)

.

Mr Oliver Ng, Director of SJ architecture (Landscape) said these awards cap the team’s recent winning streak at the International Federation of Landscape Architects AAPME Awards and HDB Design Awards in 2022. “The team’s design philosophy is to create innovative designs incorporating ecological resilience, biodiversity and smart technologies, based on rigorous research. This has underpinned the awards we won in 2022,” he said.
