Geraldton Port Asset Condition Assessment

The Mid West Port Authority (MWPA) supports an inter-modal facility that serves Western Australia mid-west region’s demand for connectivity to national and international markets. Operating a seamless 24-hour operation at multiple port locations, MWPA identified a need to undertake a single Asset Condition Assessment of the marine structures and bulk handling facility assets to establish a consistent baseline for its future asset management plan and works.

We were engaged to determine the current condition of all marine and bulk handling facility assets at Geraldton Port that were maintained by Mid West Port Authority. This assessment provides key information relation to the assets that includes:

  • Estimates of the remaining economic life of the assets
  • Identify pragmatic solutions for extending the life of the assets to 30 years
  • Prepare a whole of life expenditure plan for the most cost-effective technical solutions.

The asset condition assessment utilised methods and data that we prepared on behalf of Ports Australia for its Wharf Structure Condition Assessment Manual and represented the first practical trial of the manual. The assessment required the inspection of in excess of 5,000 asset components located on six wharves, various materials handling equipment, tug boat harbour, fishing boat harbour, breakwaters, revetments and navigation aids.
