Trincomalee District Master Plan

Surbana Jurong’s Master Plan for Sri Lanka’s Trincomalee District re-positions it to be the “Eastern Gateway of Sri Lanka”, with increased regional connectivity, sustainability measures and economic viability put in place.

Located in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka, Trincomalee District will be developed into a resilient economic hub, with a vibrant and distinct urban identity for Northern and Eastern Sri Lanka. Trincomalee’s strategic location in Bay of Bengal allows the 2,727 sqkm area to be developed as a hub for tourism, export and logistic needs.

Surbana Jurong was tasked to develop the Concept Master Plan for Trincomalee District including Detailed Master Plan for Trincomalee’s future urban area covering Urban Design, Transportation, Infrastructure, Environmental and Implementation proposals. The plan seeks to organise, improve and accelerate the social, economic and physical developments in the Trincomalee District, with a focus on uplifting the residents’ quality of life. Inspired from Trincomalee’s pristine natural environment, “B.L.U.E.” urbanism approach was adopted

  • to protect biodiversity;
  • to enhance liveability;
  • to retain its uniqueness; and
  • to strengthen the economy of Trincomalee.

Under the plan, Surbana Jurong successfully addressed the project’s environmental sustainability challenges as well as Sri Lankan Government’s push for making Trincomalee as preferred investment destination.
