Going green sets the pace for the pack

Well done! Teams from Surbana Jurong and KTP at the BCA Awards presentation dinner on 29 May 2019.

With its bold embrace of new building technologies and sustainable architectural solutions, Surbana Jurong has recorded its biggest win at the Singapore’s BCA Awards this year with a total of 39 projects the company has been involved in. These awards are organised by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) – an agency under the Ministry of National Development – championing the development of an excellent built environment for Singapore.

Apart from the awards for 39 projects, Surbana Jurong and KTP Consultants have won four key awards this year, arising from projects for Surbana Jurong’s new headquarters and the Nanyang Technological University. These are:

  • Built Environment Leadership Award Gold PLUS – Surbana Jurong
The citation notes Surbana Jurong’s strong track record and use of technology such as BIM, virtual reality (VR) and digital facilities management (SMART FM) systems.
  • Built Environment Leadership Award Gold PLUS – KTP Consultants
The award recognised KTP’s adoption of BIM and use of innovative, cost-effective tools in the construction of the tallest PPVC building in Singapore and other iconic projects.
  • Green Mark Platinum (Super Low Energy) Award – Surbana Jurong Campus
The Campus, to be completed in 2021, will achieve more than 40% improvement in energy efficiency with its sustainable design, which includes a smart and integrated building management system with a live water and energy monitoring dashboard. It uses solar photovoltaic technology, smart lighting control, an underfloor air-distribution system, and predictive smart building control. Water sustenance will be made possible thanks to rain gardens and bio-swales to enhance the efficiency of water usage.

Designed by Safdie Surbana Jurong, a partnership Surbana Jurong established in 2017 with renowned architect Mr Moshe Safdie, the upcoming global headquarters of Surbana Jurong will push boundaries in design and construction.

  • Design and Engineering Safety Award – NTU The Arc (Qualified Person: Er. Aaron Foong)
Aaron Foong, Managing Director of KTP, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, was credited with his innovative use of BIM and virtual design and construction to achieve a safe and buildable structure-foundation outcome, among other solutions.

NTU The Arc is a 6-storey building with smart classrooms and is an integral part of the university’s thrust into the digital frontier.

The 39 projects (please scroll below for the full list) which the Surbana Jurong Group was involved in also won BCA Awards this year. The awards span environmental sustainability, construction excellence, construction productivity, design and engineering safety and universal design categories. This is the largest haul of accolades the Group has achieved to-date.

The awards also underscore Surbana Jurong’s commitment towards technological innovation, sustainability, quality and excellence. It is also a recognition of the value the various teams bring to all projects.

Mr Wong Heang Fine, Group CEO of Surbana Jurong, commented: “Surbana Jurong approaches all our projects with the same philosophy – that what we plan, design and engineer must be sustainable and people centric. Having 39 of our projects win awards that span environmental sustainability, construction excellence, construction productivity, design and engineering safety and universal design is testament of this.”

“The Surbana Jurong Campus, which we are developing, will further push the boundaries of innovation and sustainable design. With our extensive experience working on green buildings such as NUS School of Design & Environment (SDE) 4, BCA SkyLab and JTC CleanTech One, we hope to inspire future high-performance buildings and create more sustainable development designs around the world.”

What our colleagues have to say:

Rena Foo, Sustainability Manager of the Facilities Management team, had worked on 14 projects that won the BCA Green Mark Award. She commented, “As a facilities manager, we approach all our projects with the same goal – to help our clients maximise energy efficiency and reap the maximum benefits. I am proud to be part of a team that has supported NTU in its green drive, delivering eight projects that are zero energy and super low energy, while facilitating the re-certification of nine other NTU buildings.”

“It is always a challenge with existing buildings as we have to work within current structures and systems, while ensuring minimal disruption. I am glad we were able to push boundaries further and implemented impactful upgrading work such as Passive Displacement Ventilation and Smart Integrated Building Management System which provided the client with significant returns on investment.”

Michael Lim, Director, M&E Engineering, Surbana Jurong, had worked on the Changi T4 project that won the BCA Construction Excellence and Construction Productivity Awards, said leveraging on new technologies is important.

“With technology advancing at a rapid pace, we recognise that advanced construction techniques and innovations play an important role in increasing quality and efficiency in the building process. As a member of the dedicated Surbana Jurong M&E team involved in the Changi Airport Terminal 4 project, we constantly leverage new technologies to improve work processes. For instance, we utilised BIM during the detailed design stage to review clashes between M&E services, structural provisions and architectural elements, to improve coordination between the disciplines. The team also adopted pre-fabricated ceramic ducts for underground cabling works to simplify installation and shorten the construction time.”

Mr Aaron Foong, KTP Managing Director, receiving the Built Environment Leadership Award GoldPLUS for KTP from Singapore’s Minister of State for National Development and Manpower, Mr Zaqy Mohamad. Mr Foong also picked up the Design and Engineering Safety Award for his work on The Arc.

Mr Eugene Seah, Surbana Jurong’s Senior Director, Special Projects, GCEO Office, collected the Built Environment Leadership Award GoldPLUS award for Surbana Jurong.
