Projects by KTP Consultants Pte Ltd, SAA Architects Pte Ltd and Robert Bird Group clinched three awards at the 2022 Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat Award of Excellence Programme:

  • Overall Category Winner in the Geotechnical Engineering Award 2022 Award of Excellence
  • Best Tall Mixed-Use Building 2022 Award of Excellence
  • Construction Award 2022 Award of Excellence respectively

Surbana Jurong Group has been honoured with three awards at the prestigious Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) award. KTP Consultants Pte Ltd (KTP), a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, was the structural engineer, foundation and geotechnical consultant for 18 Robinson, a Grade A commercial building in Singapore’s Central Business District. The building was awarded the Overall Category Winner in the Geotechnical Engineering Award 2022 Award of Excellence.

Mr Aaron Foong, KTP’s Managing Director said, “18 Robinson’s location in the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District gave the team an opportunity to realise innovative engineering solutions to overcome the challenges posed by existing infrastructure and soil conditions. The team leveraged KTP’s depth of geotechnical specialisation and yet integrated a pragmatic approach in advancing creative underground engineering solutions. This win will spur the team to continue to work collaboratively to drive cost-effective novel solutions in engineering urban developments.”

The 28-floor commercial tower sits on reclaimed land above a thick layer of marine clay and sandstone boulders. The six-level basement is almost five metres away from a pair of Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) underground tunnels that are non-suspended and floating in marine clay, which posed a challenge to excavating the ground without destabilising the existing infrastructure.

KTP used a three-cell diaphragm wall system to minimise movements of the existing tunnels during the excavation of the basement. This minimised the time and cost of the excavation, as well as avoided any adverse impact on the progress of the superstructure. Additionally, it allowed a full top-down construction sequence without the use of any temporary shoring. The system proves to be rigid, safe and effective despite the proximity to the pair of MRT tunnels.

Another member of the Group, SAA Architects Pte Ltd, was the architect and interior design consultant for City Gate Shoppes and Residences in Singapore. The 30-floor residential and retail building was awarded the Best Tall Mixed-Use Building 2022 Award of Excellence.

Mr Charles Arnal, Senior Associate Director of SAA, said, “SAA’s design of City Gate considers its unique location in an urbanised heritage precinct between the metropolitan and cultural fabric of Singapore’s city area. Drawing upon ‘motion in nature’, the curvaceous exterior of City Gate celebrates the flow of lines smoothly and fluidly, establishing a distinctive design for City Gate. The sky terraces spread across the development allow residents to connect, fostering a sense of community in a dense high-rise building. The CTBUH Award of Excellence is a strong recognition of the team’s design of this iconic landmark.”

The Council also awarded Sydney Greenland Centre the 2022 CTBUH Construction Award, which involved  Robert Bird Group (RBG), another member of the Group. Congratulations to all our teams!

(Editor’s note: More details on RBG’s work on the Sydney Greenland Centre will be released in due course)
