The signature curved cable-stayed bridge soaring over a major road in Sydney is being celebrated for its engineering complexity, construction techniques and sustainable design.

SMEC’s Sydney Metro Northwest project has won ENR’s top award – Global Project of the Year. Judges called the winner an “elegant and sustainable rail project utilising innovative construction techniques”. This prestigious win comes hot on the heels of another title which the project picked up earlier this year – ENR’s Global Best Rail Project. This makes it the only project to claim top prize in both the sector and global categories.

SMEC, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, had the role of Design Lead on the innovative skytrain project.

It was the only Australian project recognised at the awards, voted by a panel of industry veterans. The Global Best Projects competition identifies and honours the project teams behind outstanding design and construction efforts annually. Criteria is based on safety performance and innovation, as well as design and construction quality, with a special emphasis on the diversity of international project teams working in partnership. Projects are also considered for how they benefit the local community and/or the construction industry.
