KTP, member of the Surbana Jurong Group, picked up two awards at the recent ACES (Association of Consulting Engineers Singapore) Design Excellence Awards 2018 in Singapore.

It won the ACES Design Excellence Award for its creative C&S (civil & structural) engineering solutions for The Scotts Tower project. The team conceived innovative engineering solutions to deal with difficult ground conditions and space constraints as well as foundation piles left behind by a demolished building. Adding to the challenge was the site’s proximity to two underground train tunnels and the architectural requirement for the building’s iconic slanted columns.

The solutions included installing two ring walls (inner and outer) concurrently that allowed excavation work to start once the inner ring is completed. To ensure that the columns are structurally safe, the team devised an innovative “outrigger” structure that transfers part of the building’s weight to its central core, which comprises lift shafts and staircases.

The Scotts Tower gave us the excellent opportunity to express quality structural design with iconic architectural design. The recognition given by the industry is really the icing on the cake.

KTP Associate Director and C&S engineer Ng Chun Keong also received the ACES Young Consulting Engineer of the Year 2018 award. He was the C&S Project Lead for two projects – Sentosa Family Entertainment Centre, and the upcoming Singapore General Hospital’s Elective Care Centre (SGH ECC) as well as the new National Dental Centre Singapore (NDCS) – among many others.

Chun Keong joined KTP in 2012 and aspires to be a reputable Professional Engineer and make major contributions to the engineering fraternity in Singapore.

The judges were impressed by Chun Keong’s leadership, creativity and engineering prowess demonstrated in the two projects. For example, he developed a structural support system to safely suspend an aeroplane fuselage, weighing 70 tonnes, in the Sentosa Family Entertainment Centre while considering the space constraints and safety requirements. For the SGH ECC and NDCS projects, Chun Keong led the traffic engineering enhancement efforts for the entire campus site where the two projects are situated, while devising a safe and buildable construction methodology for the deep basement excavation works. This ensures public safety and minimal disruptions to the community.

It’s an honour to receive the award as it is a recognition of my contributions towards the engineering profession and the community at large. It should be a target for all aspiring engineers to strive towards.

At the same event, Surbana Jurong’s Urban Development 1 (UD1) function also picked up a Design Excellence Award for its M&E project with SP Services. The team was recognised for its work on a high energy efficiency and reliability data centre for SP Services.

SP Services’ multi-disciplinary consultancy services project was undertaken by Surbana Jurong Consultants, spearheaded by the UD1 M&E team 1 and supported by colleagues from UD1 architects, UD1 C&S, UD1 QS and the Sustainability team. The team wowed the judges with its innovative and high-quality engineering solutions, which led the centre to achieve a Power Utilisation Efficiency (PUE) rating of 1.34, exceeding the client’s requirement of a 1.4 PUE rating.

Surbana Jurong’s workscope for the project included the design of the space at the data centre’s rooftop to house the generators and chillers that support the data centre operations on level one. Hot and cold aisle containment systems were installed to increase cooling and airflow efficiencies of the IT racks, reducing operational costs and energy usage.

On level one, the data centre adopts a room-within-a-room design concept whereby the operations are surrounded by service corridors to reduce solar heat gain and external heat conduction. To cool the IT equipment optimally, the team fitted computer room air-conditioners with variable fan speeds and integrated them with sensors to regulate the temperature of the racks. In addition, a predictive maintenance software was installed to improve manpower utilisation and minimise equipment downtime.

Senior Director Lek Siang Hwa (centre) receiving the award from Lawrence Wong, Minister of National Development; and Chua Tong Seng, President of ACES.

The PUE target given to us by the client was very challenging but we exceeded their expectations, including the introduction of some innovative solutions. In the course of delivering this project, I was very encouraged by the interdisciplinary cooperation and dedication of the project team members who challenged each other to excel.

Lek Siang Hwa
Senior Director (M&E), UD1
