Darwin’s Henbury Special School took top spot in the landscape category for Northern Territory/South Australia.

Designed by SMEC’s in-house urban design and landscape team, Henbury Special School in Darwin was recently recognised on Channel 10’s Australia by Design series, winning first place in the landscape category for the Northern Territory/South Australia and ranking No. 5 in the Top 10 nationally.

This dynamic external school environment integrates outdoor classrooms and experiences for children and carers in a special needs school. The landscape design creates an inviting entry to the school and a spectacular amphitheatre creates a cultural space for the whole school community to come together in one place. This is the second time SMEC’s landscape team has been recognised in recent weeks, with the recently redeveloped Palmwoods Town Centre on the Sunshine Coast winning a 2018 National Landscape Architecture Award from the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects (AILA). SMEC delivered a range of services including urban design, landscape and planting design to the Sunshine Coast Council for the redevelopment.
