Bruce Highway in Queensland, Australia, frequently closes when the Haughton River running beneath it floods, causing the road to be unpassable. As part of the solution, SMEC, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, was tasked to help upgrade the highway to reduce the impact from flooding. The company was awarded the Construction Administration Services contract as part of the Haughton River Floodplain Upgrade Project, one of North Queensland’s most significant projects to date.

This project, considered one of the most complex in Queensland, will greatly reduce flooding closures and improve safety and efficiency for road users on the Bruce Highway in the Australian state. Five new bridges and two highway overpasses of the existing cane-tramway open-level crossings will be constructed, and 13.5km of the Bruce Highway will be upgraded across the Haughton River floodplain. SMEC will ensure the construction contract is executed in accordance with the terms, while The Infrastructure Group will design and deliver the upgrades.
